Neurorehabilitation

Our neurorehabilitation service supports children who have acquired a brain or spinal injury usually due to a traumatic event.

The rehabilitation is undertaken primarily by the therapy services e.g. psychology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy but also extensively involves medical and nursing colleagues and other professionals from education and social services.

Rehabilitation Co-ordinator

The rehabilitation pathway is managed by the Rehabilitation and Trauma Co-ordinator whose role it is to support the child and family through their rehabilitation from the initial admission right through to follow up care at home or school.

This role is undertaken by physiotherapists Hannah Keable and Claire Tripathi.

Rehabilitation aims

Throughout the patient pathway the Rehabilitation Team are aiming to do three things:

• reduce any impairments/difficulties the child may have
• improve the child’s activity and strength
• enhance the child’s participation in their usual activities of daily living

Location

The specialist rehabilitation will be carried out in the Intensive Care or High Dependency Unit and the Neurosciences Ward. After discharge from hospital it will take place at the Ryegate Children’s Centre, at home or school.

Team work

The Rehabilitation Team meets every week to develop a treatment plan for each child’s particular needs. They aim to make it the best possible experience for the child and family and achieve the best possible outcomes.
