Welcome to Sheffield Children’s! If you’re reading this, you might be staying on one of our wards or waiting in our Emergency Department or on the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU).
While you are staying with us at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, we want to make sure that you have your needs met so your stay is as comfortable as possible. Below, we have provided some key information and links about your stay.
As part of our admissions process patients aged 12 and above will now be asked if they smoke, or vape. This is part of our QUIT programme. Any patient who says they do smoke will be referred to our specialist Tobacco Treatment Advisors and offered access to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), such as patches, gum and lozenges, and other support as part of their routine hospital care.
To start with this is happening in Wards 1 and 2, Theatre Admission Unit and Pre-operative care, but other areas of the hospital will follow soon. Parents, carers and family members who smoke can also access specialist support during the child’s admission and from a referral to the local community stop smoking service.

While you’re here you might notice staff using smartphones or tablets as part of your care. This is so staff can use new digital systems which help access patient information quickly and securely, improving communication between colleagues. So, don’t worry if you see a member of staff on their phone or a tablet, at the bedside or on a ward corridor, they will be working – accessing the most recent patient information, recording vital signs observations such as blood pressure, heart rate and temperature, or contacting colleagues securely – not scrolling on social media!
In the sections below we’ve highlighted information you might find useful while you’re at the hospital. If you need anything else, don’t hesitate to ask a member of staff.
Thank you, Sheffield Children’s.
