Burns

Here on Burns we care for patients immediately after sustaining a burn injury and in the following weeks. Burns also cares for children with other skin loss conditions such as Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSSS).

We have a dedicated team of excellent surgeons and a friendly team of experienced nursing and therapy staff giving highly skilled care.

Find out more about the Burns Service.

Beds

Burns forms part of Ward 2 and has four en suite bedrooms and a daily dressing service for burns patients, while Ward 2 has ten en suite bedrooms and two four-bed bays for patients with a variety of conditions.

Each bedroom has a comfortable sofa bed for parents to stay overnight.

Facilities

We want to make sure that patients are kept occupied and entertained and that their hospital stay is as pleasant as possible. Facilities are shared with the adjacent wards and include:

  • a play room full of toys, books and games for younger children
  • an adolescents’ room – a parent-free zone for patients aged 12 and over that has video games, a large-screen TV and comfy chairs
  • a television by each bed that is free to use and has many Freeview channels and some Sky channels

All the wards have play specialists who organise activities to help patients have fun while they are here. They are also available to distract patients during procedures that take place on the wards like taking blood or fitting a cannula.

There is also a dedicated parents’ room where drinking water and free hot drinks are available.
