ADHD and Comorbid Conditions Course

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is working in partnership with the British Academy of Childhood Disability (BACD) to offer this course.

Audience: Doctors, specialist nurses, education staff and any other health professionals supporting children and young people with ADHD and their families
Duration: Four months distance learning including one online study day
Cost: £450 / £400 BACD members

Course content

This course is developed from unit 7 of the Paediatric Neurodisability Diploma and provides in-depth training in how to assess and support children with ADHD and their families.

After completing the course you will be able to:

• Understand the definition of ADHD and its possible aetiologies and synthesise this into clinical practice
  • understand the relationship between ADHD and coexisting/comorbid developmental and mental health disorders
  • understand how ADHD changes with age
  • understand the possible outcomes
• Be part of a team involved in assessment and management of children and young people with ADHD and comorbid developmental and mental health difficulties
  • recognise the common ways in which affected children and young people first present to services
  • approach assessment and management
  • be sensitive of the effects on the child and family
  • understand non-pharmacological management
  • understand the issues around medication and be able to advise appropriately on medication
  • understand how comorbid conditions affect management
• Critically evaluate local health services and contribute to service development
• Make informed judgements within this area, knowing when to ask for help and when to refer on
• Provide effective advice to education, social care and other agencies

Towards the end of the course you will be expected to submit an assessment task for formal marking.

Study days

As part of the course you will need to attend a study day at the Ryegate Children’s Centre in Sheffield. This day focuses on:

• The role of the ADHD specialist nurse
• Attachment disorder
• Current ADHD service issues
