Ehlers-Danlos information

Welcome to our Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Service where we diagnose children and adults with suspected complex EDS throughout the country.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited disorders where skin, joints, blood vessels and hollow organs can be affected as a result of underlying defects in connective tissue.

Several major types are identified including classical, hypermobile, vascular, kyphoscoliotic, arthrochalasic and dermatosparactic EDS.

In its mildest form symptoms can be limited to hypermobile joints, but in the more severe forms it can be disabling and even life threatening.

Making a diagnosis of EDS can be difficult and this is the reason a specialist service is needed.

Referrals to EDS National Diagnostic Service

Referrals are accepted from NHS Consultants in Secondary or Tertiary care for both adults and children.

The service sees patients who are suspected of having a diagnosis of classical, vascular or a rare type of EDS. The service will also see patients with a known diagnosis of classical, vascular or a rare type of EDS.
Patients with hypermobile EDS or Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder are not seen in this clinic.
