Growth and Measurement

measuring a patient

In our Growth and Measurement Department we take accurate measurements of height, weight, head circumference, sitting height, leg length, waist circumference, skin folds and arm span. We can then calculate annual growth rate, body mass index, body surface area and predicted adult height.

These measurements help to monitor a child’s growth and general health, and are needed to calculate doses of medication.

Getting ready to be measured

To make these measurements as accurate as we can, children need to wear as little clothing as possible. Babies will need all their clothing and nappy removed. Older children can be measured in a dry nappy and will need to remove all outer clothing. Some may be happier wearing a hospital gown over their underwear or light clothing to be measured in.

We have facilities within the department to weigh children in their wheelchairs, if necessary.
