Dr Peter Baxter

Dr Peter Baxter has been a full time Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital since 1996. He cares for patients with neurological problems as inpatients on the wards and as outpatients in clinics at the Ryegate Centre, the Northern General Hospital, and in combined clinics at Barnsley, Boston, Chesterfield, Doncaster, Grimsby and Rotherham.
He also leads specialist multidisciplinary clinics for children with ataxia, muscle disorders and neuropathies, and participates in multidisciplinary clinics for children with spinal conditions and neuro-metabolic disorders.

Dr Baxter underwent pre-clinical training at Cambridge University and clinical training at University College Hospital, London, qualifying in 1978. This was followed by training posts in general paediatrics and paediatric neurology in London (Kings College and Brompton Hospitals), France (Médecin Résident Etranger, Hospices Civils de Lyon, France), Edinburgh (Royal Hospital for Sick Children) Sheffield (Children’s Hospital) and most recently in Newcastle upon Tyne (Newcastle General Hospital). Dr Baxter was awarded his MD from the University of Cambridge in 1991.

His research interests include pyridoxine-dependent seizures, management of neuromuscular conditions and ataxia. Previous studies have included aspects of microcephaly, hydrocephalus and raised intracranial pressure, and mitochondrial disorders.

Dr Baxter is an examiner for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. He is currently the Immediate Past President of the British Paediatric Neurology Association; Secretary of the European Paediatric Neurology Society; Editor-in- Chief of the medical journal ‘Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology’, and a member of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.
