Dr Christopher Rittey has been a full-time Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust since 1991. He has developed a comprehensive paediatric neurology service and provides in-patient care for children with acute and chronic neurological conditions at The Children’s Hospital, Sheffield as well as out-patient care at the Ryegate Children’s Centre and in combined clinics at Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop, Grimsby and Boston. Dr Rittey is the clinical lead for epilepsy services within the neurology team and provides a weekly specialist Seizure Clinic as well as regular multidisciplinary Epilepsy Surgery clinics. He continues to participate in the multidisciplinary Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy service, having established this service in the Trust during the 1990s.
Dr Rittey obtained a Beit Scholarship to attend Medical School at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1982. He undertook initial training in paediatrics in Zimbabwe (Harare Central Hospital) and Glasgow, subsequently completing training in Paediatric Neurology in Glasgow. Prior to taking up his consultant post in Sheffield he obtained a Clinical Fellowship in Paediatric Neurology at the Children’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia where he undertook a review of childhood neuropathy.

His interests include the management of complex epilepsy – particularly dietetic and surgical treatment of epilepsy (pioneering the role of Vagus Nerve Stimulation in treatment of refractory epilepsy in the UK) as well as neurological sleep disorders. His research interests include development of techniques, with neuroradiology colleagues, to detect subtle cortical abnormalities in children with refractory epilepsy.

Dr Rittey has been instrumental in development of a number of specialist services within the Trust including Neurosciences.
